Other Uses for XBOX 360 and Playstation Hardware

Today, video game consoles are being used for more than single gaming and taking part in online video games tournaments. Now, doctors and scientists are finding real-world applications for these devices that can change the world and save lives.

 The XBOX360 is currently being used to in medical research at the University of Minnesota. Professor Nikolas Papanikolopoulos bought the XBOX Kinect and began using the hardware as a monitoring tool. Using it, the professor is able to observe children as part of research that may help doctors diagnose behavioural diseases like OCD and ADD. The data provided by the Kinect’s monitoring system will provide doctors with tangible information, which they currently do not have access to, saving researchers about $100 000.

The American Air Force is using PlayStation 3s for other purposes. The Defense Department hooked up over 1700 consoles, creating one of the world’s biggest super computers. The impressive piece of technology allows them to research AI, process satellite pictures and enhance radar imaging.
